How-to Celebrate Chinese New Year.

The project brief guiding this book instructed designers to create a how-to book about a subject personal to them. I took this opportunity to cover family traditions because I wanted to learn more about my grandparents’ history and their experience as refugees to Canada. The candid family photos featured throughout the book capture the joy of being with family. Red was chosen as the sole colour  because Red Envelopes are a main component of our traditions. This book is intended for those who are curious about one version of Canadian Chinese culture, or who are comparing their own Chinese New Year celebrations to my own. Learning about the struggles my grandparents underwent in an impoverished country can inflict feelings of gratitude for readers, as it has for me. This topic can potentially spark discussions about cultural similarities and differences.
